Every part of my soul wants to feel you again. I want to hug you like it’s been a thousand years since I saw you. Let’s hug so tightly that our hearts melt through our chests and become a lucid summer ocean. So our lung’s breath guides the waves over the shore and triumphantly smash the rocks to smithereens. Let’s feel each other so completely that not even the moon commands the tides of our bodies twined together, a beautiful mess of limbs strung together by seaweed, seen by pale light on the sand and encrusted in the corals of the sea.

I did not know how much comfort I took in hearing the church bell sing so poignantly, yet blend with and move along the breeze of so many summer afternoons. How much I missed the simple silence in hanging my laundry in the backyard and hearing midday traffic pass beyond my street. I did not understand how I yearned to be comforted by the warm love of the sun and the feeling of your arm around me as you pet my hair.
But the sun has set, rising for other places to treasure
The traffic sleeps nearby, stirring only to the slightest of sounds
And I am left wondering what brings you comfort now.
I figured out why I sleep only on the couch when I visit home. For the longest time I thought it was because I’ve never been comfortable in my room and every time I walked in there to get something I would see your sweater on my bed and start to cry like the baby I am and always will be. That was not why.
It’s where my heart stumbled, where I uttered my ancient feelings in the soothing quiet of the night beside you. You who knew, could feel it when we spoke and see it when I looked at you through adoring eyes. You who made me comfortable and brave.
Where my cowardly heart slipped off of my tongue
And into your knowing arms.
Your voice is the only home I’ve ever known
(But it’s gone silent and I must pack my things and be on my way)
Please let me stay.
Pain makes me bolder
It blows a cold wind in my sails
